Functional Neurological Disorder is considered a rare condition because it is often misdiagnosed, it is hard to diagnose, and it is often misunderstood. While Functional Neurological Disorder is as common as Multiple Sclerosis. It is harder to diagnose because there is no definitive testing available currently. Throughout history this condition has had multiple names.
The most recent name for Functional Neurological Disorder is actually Conversion Disorder here in the United States. Conversion Disorder however is different than Functional Neurological Disorder recent studies have shown. Conversion Disorder is where psychological issues manifest physically into actual symptoms. Functional Neurological Disorder is different because there is a miscommunication between the brain and the central nervous system in the amygdala section of the brain. Because of the Amygdala section, emotional center, in the brain being affected oftentimes people don't realize that there's actually a biological issue within the brain causing the emotions to physically manifest.
When we get stressed out or we get overstimulated we can have our symptoms acting up. With Conversion Disorder and Functional Neurological Disorder we have to eliminate everything under the sun before we are actually truly diagnosed. However, Conversion Disorder has a root cause often times dealing with trama. The root cause for Functional Neurological Disorder is harder to discover due to lack of testing.
Currently they are researching ways to test for this condition using fMRI. fMRI is Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging. What that means is you actually move while inside the MRI so your brain lights up showing how your central nervous system is actually receiving messages.
Oftentimes as I mentioned we are misdiagnosed. Usually we're diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Conversion Disorder, or they just truly don't know what's going on and you get shuffled from one doctor to another. Because of this we are considered unicorns.
